What’s Happening at the Wekeezhìı Land and Water Board - Mackay Lake Retreat

The Communications Officer participated in this year’s Wek'èezhìı Land and Water Board (WLWB) staff retreat which took place at the Yellowknives Dene First Nations’ (YKDFN) camp on Mackay Lake. The YKDFN gave permission for the camp’s use by the staff and Board Members from September 3 to 6, 2019. The participants arrived by float plane and began the retreat with a traditional practice called feeding the fire to thank the land and ancestors. The staff joined in many team-building activities over the course of the retreat including hiking, net fishing, cranberry picking, learning to gut and fillet different kinds of fish, learning to make dry fish, and making bannock.

Bear monitor, Paul Mackenzie, and WLWB Chair, Joe Mackenzie, took the staff on a boat ride to show the beautiful lake and shores surrounding it, as well as share traditional Dene stories and laws governing the use and care of the land and water. The staff also learned about the plants and wildlife in the area going on many excursions to connect with and learn about the land the staff work to protect.

Ması̀ cho to the YKDFN for the use of their camp, and to the bear monitor, Paul, who accompanied the WLWB staff. It was a privilege to be on the land and to experience Mackay Lake while building our team!
